The Triskele symbol, otherwise known as the Triskelion, is a trilateral symbol consisting of three interlocked spirals. It appears in a variety of places as a three-faceted spiral, three interlocking spirals, or other variations of one shape repeated three times.
Widely regarded as one of the oldest Irish symbols in existence, it appears at the Neolithic monument Newgrange, in County Meath Ireland, which dates to approximately 3200 BCE.
As many of the primitive tribes of ancient Europe did not have a formal written language, they instead relied upon their mystic symbols to convey thousands of years of their culture, wisdom and spiritual meaning. One of the most powerful of these is the Triskelion symbols that dates back to 5,000 years (or more), to the very dawn of civilization in Europe.
This particular symbol is most commonly associated with the Celtic tribes of central Europe and Britain, especially those referred to as the Gaelic nations of Ireland, Wales and Scotland. It seemed to have been the most common and most important of their symbols, therefore it was found throughout Celtic society, appearing on many of their artifacts, such as ceremonial gold cups, everyday pottery, clothing, coinage, weaponry, shields, religious items, and carved into stone monuments.
Other Trinity connections associated with the Triskele are life- death- rebirth, past- present- future, earth- water- sky, creation- protection- destruction, mind, body and spirit working in harmony, as well as the three gifts given by the Norse gods Óðin, Vili and Vé which brought humans into existence from mere driftwood with: inspiration (breath) - passion (will) - poetry (sacredness).
Each one deals with some aspect of personal growth, human development, and spiritual progress.
